How to remove a financial association on TransUnion

Still financially linked to someone on your TransUnion report? If all joint accounts are closed, you can break that link by filing a Notice of Disassociation with TransUnion.

One important thing: you need to do this with each CRA separately. Removing the link on TransUnion doesn’t touch the other two.

Key takeaways

  • Free to dispute — your legal right under CCA s.159 and UK GDPR.
  • TransUnion must respond within 28 days.
  • Lender has 28 days to respond to TransUnion’s enquiry.
  • Check your TransUnion report free via Credit Karma.

How to dispute with TransUnion

Submit a Notice of Disassociation through TransUnion’s online service at transunion.co.uk. Or email [email protected] with your details and the associate’s details.

TransUnion verifies that no joint financial products remain active. Once confirmed, the association is removed.

TransUnion-specific tips

If you use Credit Karma, the disassociation must go direct to TransUnion — you can’t file a Notice of Disassociation through Credit Karma.

Evidence you’ll need

  • Prepare confirmation that all joint accounts have been closed (closing statements or letters from lenders), proof of separate addresses if applicable, and the associate’s details (name, date of birth if known).
  • Submit your Notice of Disassociation through TransUnion’s online service at transunion.co.uk, or email [email protected] with your details and the associate’s details. Note that you can’t file a Notice of Disassociation through Credit Karma — it must go direct to TransUnion.

Timeline

TransUnion processing takes approximately 28 days. They verify with lenders that no joint financial products remain active. Once confirmed, the association is removed from your TransUnion report.

Credit Karma users should note that the disassociation must go directly to TransUnion — you cannot file through Credit Karma. Allow an extra 7 days after processing for the update to appear on Credit Karma.

If your dispute is rejected

If TransUnion rejects the disassociation, review all joint accounts carefully — dormant bank accounts, old utility accounts, or store cards can be easy to miss. Every joint product must be closed before the association can be removed.

TransUnion must acknowledge formal complaints within 5 working days and respond within 8 weeks. Email [email protected] or post to PO Box 647, Hull, HU9 9QZ.
