How to remove a financial association from your credit file

Still financially linked to an ex? That can hurt you. When you’re financially associated with someone, lenders may check their credit history when you apply for credit. If their credit is poor, it could be dragging yours down.

The good news: you can break this link. You just need to close all joint accounts first. And no, simply living at the same address does NOT create a financial association — only joint financial products do.

Key takeaways

  • You must close ALL joint accounts before you can disassociate. No exceptions.
  • Apply to each CRA separately — they don’t share disassociation notices between them.
  • Just sharing an address doesn’t create a financial link. Only joint financial products do.
  • Disassociation removes the link but not the history of joint accounts.
  • Experian has an online form. Equifax and TransUnion require direct contact.

Is their bad credit actually dragging yours down?

Yes, indirectly. When you apply for credit, the lender may check your financial associate’s credit history. A joint account with missed payments appears on both people’s reports. The financial link itself doesn’t directly lower your score, but a poorly managed joint account will.

How to break the link

Prerequisites — you MUST first close or transfer all joint accounts to a single name. This includes joint bank accounts, joint loans, joint mortgages, and any other joint financial products. If you still share a mortgage, Experian may break the association if you’ve lived apart for 6+ months.

You must apply to each CRA separately. The CRA checks that no joint financial products remain active. Once confirmed, the association is removed.

Experian: Apply online at ins.experian.co.uk/disassociation.

Equifax: Contact Equifax directly via the Online Help portal or post the Notice of Disassociation form.

TransUnion: Submit through their online service at transunion.co.uk.

What actually changes (and what doesn’t)

It removes your former associate from your credit file. Their data is no longer visible to lenders searching your file.

It does NOT remove the history of joint accounts — those accounts still show on your report, but the link to the other person is broken.

If you open a new joint product with the same person, the association is re-created.

Evidence checklist

  • Confirmation that all joint accounts are closed (closing statements)
  • Letters from lenders confirming account closure or transfer to sole name
  • Proof of separate addresses (if applicable, for mortgage disassociation)

FAQs

We still have a joint mortgage. Can I still disassociate?

Usually no — all joint accounts must be closed first. Experian is the one exception: they may break the link if you’ve lived apart for 6+ months even with a joint mortgage.

We just live together. Does that create a financial link?

No. Only joint financial products (bank accounts, loans, credit applications) create a financial association. Flatmates, family members, or partners who don’t share finances aren’t linked.

How long does disassociation take?

About 28 days. The CRA checks that no joint products remain active, then removes the link.
