How to dispute your Equifax credit report

Spotted something wrong on your Equifax credit report? You can challenge it for free — either through Equifax’s Online Help portal or via ClearScore (which uses Equifax data under the hood).

Equifax must investigate within 28 days. One advantage of Equifax: they give lenders just 21 days to respond, which often means faster resolution.

  • Eight dispute categories including financial accounts, fraud, searches, and public information.
  • ClearScore disputes feed through to Equifax. They’ll create an Equifax Help account for you to track progress.
  • Free statutory report at equifax.co.uk/products/credit/statutory-report.

How to submit your dispute

1

Go to Equifax Online Help at help.equifax.co.uk/EquifaxOnlineHelp. Create an account or log in (this is separate from any paid Equifax subscription).

2

Navigate to “Errors on my Credit Report” and select the dispute category that matches your issue: Financial Account information, Financial Connection (financial associations), CIFAS/Fraud, Address History, Electoral Roll, Search information (hard searches), Public Information (Bankruptcy/CCJ/IVA), or Other Name information.

3

Select a dispute reason within the category, provide details, and upload supporting evidence.

4

Equifax confirms receipt within 24 hours.

Can you dispute through ClearScore?

ClearScore uses Equifax data exclusively (in the UK). You can raise disputes through ClearScore’s official disputes process, which feeds through to Equifax.

When you dispute via ClearScore, Equifax creates an Online Help account for you and emails you the login details to track progress. ClearScore cannot change any information itself — only Equifax can.

For simple disputes, ClearScore’s process works fine. For complex disputes requiring evidence upload, going direct to Equifax is more effective.

Equifax contact details

You can reach Equifax by phone on 0800 014 2955 (freephone) or 0333 321 4043 (local rate). Their lines are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

To send a letter, write to Equifax Ltd, Customer Service Centre, PO Box 10036, Leicester, LE3 4FS.

For complaints and escalations, email [email protected].

Equifax also has an alternative dispute form at disputeuk.zendesk.com/hc/en-us, which is mainly used for disputes raised through partner sites like ClearScore.

What can you dispute on Equifax?

You can dispute any inaccurate information on your Equifax report. This includes late payments, defaults, CCJs (note: if a CCJ is paid within one calendar month of the judgement, it should be removed entirely), accounts you don’t recognise, duplicates, incorrect balances, old data (6+ years), personal details, financial associations, and unauthorised hard searches.

Equifax retains hard searches for 2 years. CCJs only apply in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

What evidence can you upload?

Standard document formats (PDF, JPEG, PNG) are accepted through the online portal. No specific file size limits are stated.

Postal submissions should be clear, legible copies — never send originals.

How long will it take?

Receipt confirmation: within 24 hours. The lender has 21 days to respond. Total resolution: up to 28 days, though ClearScore notes it’s usually quicker.

During investigation, Equifax adds a dispute flag to the entry on your credit report, visible to anyone checking your file.

What if Equifax says no?

Don’t stop there — you’ve got several ways to keep pushing.

You can file a fresh dispute with additional evidence. Gather any new supporting documents and submit them again through the Equifax Online Help portal.

You’re also entitled to add a Notice of Correction to your file. This is a free statement of up to 200 words that you can add through the Online Help portal, and lenders must take it into account.

It’s worth contacting the lender directly as well. They’re the ones who own the data, and sometimes going straight to them is more effective than working through Equifax.

If none of that works, you can escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service. It’s completely free, but you’ll need to do so within 6 months of Equifax’s final response.

For data protection concerns, you can also raise a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO).
