How to dispute with Experian

Log in to your free Experian account at experian.co.uk. Navigate to the disputed account entry and submit a query through the contact form. Describe the late payment error clearly and attach your evidence (bank statement showing on-time payment).

Alternatively, email [email protected] with your details, the account in question, and your evidence attached as PDFs. Or post to Consumer Help Service, PO Box 9000, Nottingham, NG80 7WP.

Experian will add a “disputed” note to the entry while investigating. They contact the lender, who must respond. If the lender agrees the data is wrong, Experian updates your report.

Experian-specific tips

Experian retains late payment markers for 6 years but hard credit searches for only 1 year (shorter than Equifax and TransUnion). If your late payment dispute is rejected, Experian takes 2–4 weeks to add a Notice of Correction, which is faster than the other CRAs.

Evidence you’ll need

  • Your bank statement showing the payment cleared on or before the due date is the single most powerful piece of evidence. Make sure it clearly shows the payment date, amount, and recipient. You should also gather your payment confirmation or receipt from the lender, the direct debit mandate proving the payment was set up correctly, and any correspondence confirming the due date.
  • Experian accepts evidence in PDF, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, and TIFF formats — up to 5 MB per document and 15 MB total per session, with a maximum of 5 documents. Upload through your free Experian account, or post copies to Consumer Help Service, PO Box 9000, Nottingham, NG80 7WP. You can also email evidence to [email protected].

Timeline

Experian must respond to your dispute within 28 days under the Consumer Credit Act. The lender has 28 days to respond to Experian’s enquiry. Experian typically acknowledges initial contact within 1–2 working days, and many late payment disputes resolve within 2–3 weeks when the evidence is clear.

While the investigation is open, Experian adds a “disputed” note to the entry on your report. Worth noting: Experian retains hard credit searches for only 1 year, compared to 2 years at Equifax and TransUnion.

If your dispute is rejected

If Experian rejects your dispute, you can add a Notice of Correction (up to 200 words) to your file — this is a statutory right under Section 159 of the Consumer Credit Act, and Experian must accept it. Experian typically takes 2–4 weeks to add this, which is faster than the other CRAs.

File a formal complaint with the lender (they have 8 weeks to respond). If still unresolved, escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service (free, 0300 123 9 123). Experian’s own complaints freephone is 0800 013 8888, or email [email protected]. Postal complaints go to: Customer Relations Team, Experian, PO Box 8000, Nottingham, NG80 7WF.

FAQs

How long does a late payment stay on my Experian report?

Six years from the date it was recorded. Its impact on your score diminishes over time, with the most significant effect in the first two years.

Can I dispute a late payment through Free Experian account?

Yes. Free Experian account shows your Experian data and you can raise disputes through it, which are forwarded to Experian for investigation.

What if the payment was only a few days late?

If the payment was genuinely late, even by one day, the lender can report it and a dispute won’t succeed. However, you can contact the lender directly and ask for a goodwill removal.
