How to dispute a CCJ on Experian

A CCJ on your Experian report is about as serious as it gets. But there are legitimate ways to get it removed or updated.

Paid within one calendar month? It can be wiped completely. Didn’t know about the court papers? You might be able to set it aside. Over six years old? It should already be gone.

How to dispute with Experian

Experian receives CCJ data from the Registry Trust (Register of Judgments, Orders and Fines). To update or remove a CCJ on Experian:

Paid within 1 month: Apply for a Certificate of Cancellation (Form N443, £19). Once the CCJ is cancelled from the Register, Experian is notified and removes it.

Paid after 1 month: Apply for a Certificate of Satisfaction (same form, same fee). Experian updates the CCJ to “satisfied”.

Set aside: Provide Experian with the court order. Or submit a dispute through your account referencing the set-aside.

Over 6 years: Contact Experian to request removal if it hasn’t been removed automatically.

Experian-specific tips

Experian’s CCJ data comes from the Registry Trust, not from lenders directly. This means the update process is different from other disputes — you need to update the Register first (via Form N443), then Experian follows.

Evidence you’ll need

  • If you paid within one calendar month, you need a Certificate of Cancellation (Form N443, £19 fee payable to the court). If you paid after one month, apply for a Certificate of Satisfaction (same form and fee). For a set-aside, you need the court order. In all cases, gather proof of payment (bank statement or receipt).
  • Critically, paying the debt does not automatically update the Register of Judgments — you must submit Form N443 to the court yourself. Experian receives CCJ data from the Registry Trust, not from lenders, so updating the Register is the essential first step. Upload evidence through your free Experian account in PDF, JPEG, PNG, GIF, BMP, or TIFF format (max 5 MB per document), or post to PO Box 9000, Nottingham, NG80 7WP.

Timeline

CCJ updates depend on the Registry Trust notifying Experian. After you submit Form N443, court processing takes approximately 2 weeks. Experian is then notified by the Registry Trust and updates your report. Total time from form submission to updated Experian report: typically 2–4 weeks.

Experian acknowledges disputes within 1–2 working days. Because CCJ data comes from the Register rather than a lender, there’s no lender response window — Experian verifies directly against the Registry Trust’s records.

If your dispute is rejected

If Experian hasn’t updated your report after you’ve received your Certificate, contact them directly with a copy. Because CCJ data comes from the Registry Trust, escalation is usually straightforward — Experian can verify against the Register.

Experian’s complaints freephone is 0800 013 8888, or email [email protected]. Postal complaints: Customer Relations Team, PO Box 8000, Nottingham, NG80 7WF. If the Registry Trust has updated but Experian hasn’t reflected the change, this is a data accuracy issue under UK GDPR.

FAQs

How long does a CCJ stay on Experian?

Six years from the date of the judgement. If paid in full within one calendar month, it can be completely removed.

Do I need to update Experian separately after getting a Certificate?

Usually no — the Registry Trust notifies the CRAs. But if Experian hasn’t updated after 2–4 weeks, contact them with your Certificate.

Does a CCJ apply in Scotland?

No. CCJs apply in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland only. Scotland has Decrees under a different legal system.
