How to add a Notice of Correction with TransUnion

A Notice of Correction (NOC) is a short note that you can add to your credit report to explain any information that may be harming your credit score.

This can include reasons for missed payments, unusual financial circumstances, or other relevant details that can help lenders understand your financial situation better. For example, if you were made redundant or went through an illness, you can use a NOC to give some context to lenders. This can help them understand your situation and to make more informed decisions about your credit applications.

How can I add a Notice of Correction to my TransUnion credit report?

To add a NOC with TransUnion, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Before you can add a NOC, you need to get a copy of your credit report from TransUnion. You can either get your free statutory report from TransUnion or sign up to one of the many credit monitoring services that give you access to your TransUnion credit report for free. The main ones are Credit Karma, MoneySuperMarket, and MoneySavingExpert.
  2. Review your credit report and identify the specific information that you want to correct or explain. This could be a missed payment, an incorrectly recorded default, an account you don’t recognise, or anything else.
  3. Write a short note (no longer than 200 words) explaining the circumstances behind the information. Make sure that you stick to the facts, don’t insult anyone, and don’t appeal to emotions.
  4. You can submit your NOC online via the TransUnion website, or by post. Make sure to include your TransUnion reference number and any other documentation that may be asked.
  5. TransUnion will review your NOC to ensure that it meets their guidelines. If it does, they will add it to your credit report. If not, they will contact you to suggest you use a different wording or to provide more information.

One thing to remember: besides TransUnion, you will also need to add your Notice of Correction to the credit reports held by Equifax and Experian. Each agency handles its own version of your credit report independently.

Also, once you’ve added it, an NOC will remain on your TransUnion credit file until you ask them to remove it.

Can a Notice of Correction improve my TransUnion credit score?

No, a Notice of Correction cannot directly improve your TransUnion credit score in the UK.

A Notice of Correction is only useful to provide some context to lenders so that they take your situation into account and understand why a negative entry exists on your report. But it does not improve your credit score.

The good news is that now there are many apps that can help you improve your credit score. One such app is Wollit.

Wollit is an app available both on Android and iOS, and it works by reporting a fixed-fee monthly subscription as a loan repayment to all three credit reference agencies, including TransUnion.

This helps you build a history of timely debt repayments, which is the main factor that matters for your credit score.

Over time, this will reduce the impact of a negative entry in your credit report much more than a Notice of Correction ever could. It will also give you an opportunity to show lenders that you truly have been improving since the negative event happened, and it will make the Notice of Correction on your TransUnion file seem like less of an excuse.
